The QAMT Executive would like to extend their thanks to Carole for a wonderful pre-conference session. Participants were actively engaged during the day in a hands-on exploration of math concepts and process'.

The Power of Mathematical Questions:

What can be learned about student understanding?

QPAT Pre-conference full-day workshop guest speaker:

Carole Saundry

Students approach and think about mathematical tasks in diverse - and often surprising - ways.  Digging into student understanding demands good and thought-full questions; questions that engage children in thinking deeply about a mathematical concept, and in exploring multiple methods for resolving the task.  How can we pose questions that allow us to access student thinking?  And how can we use what we observe to then assess what students know and can do?

This session will provide an opportunity for participants to engage with student work and classroom video to explore these issues, and to consider the power of mathematical questions in their own classroom settings.

Bio:

Carole Saundry is a District Curriculum Coordinator with the Richmond School District in B.C., author for Pearson's Math Makes Sense program and has presented internationally on mathematical thinking.  In her work, she engages classroom teachers in collaborative planning, teaching and assessing student work to promote mathematical thinking and reasoning.  Supporting student diversity through rich questions and teaching through problem-solving underlie her practice.  Carole is raising a 9 year-old mathematician named Cam who challenges her to think differently, every single day. carole saundry
